A place of community, heritage
and fly fishing

For many years, the dilapidated and earthquake-damaged building of the former village dairy stood abandoned in the idyllic village of Kal-Koritnica, just a few minutes from Bovec. This space once served as an important gathering point for local farmers, where milk was collected for further processing and delivery. Although dairy farming has declined over the years, the village has maintained a strong livestock tradition. Today, larger farms still operate in the area, processing milk into homemade cheese products, and the surrounding landscape remains closely connected to nature, pastoralism, and tradition.
Since the building was slated for demolition due to its disrepair, the village would have lost an important space for socializing and community life. Therefore, the Municipality of Bovec and the Local Community of Kal-Koritnica joined forces and prepared a project for the renovation and new conceptual design of the building. With the help of funds from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund and the Republic of Slovenia, the modern Fishing House was created on the site of the former dairy.
Today, the building serves as an important meeting point for the local community and visitors. The upper floor houses a multi-purpose space for community meetings, workshops, educational programs, cultural events, and various activities that maintain the cohesion of the village core.

A special place is occupied by the ground floor of the building, which houses the Interpretive Center for Fly Fishing of the Upper Soča Region, “Catch and Release.” The center introduces visitors to the world of fly fishing, angling, and the rich natural heritage of the Soča River in a modern and interactive way. Fly fishing is the only permitted method of fishing on the Soča, and it is based on respect for nature and the “catch and release” principle.
The exhibition presents life in the Soča River, freshwater fish species of the upper course, and the two greatest natural peculiarities of the area – the Soča trout and the grayling. Visitors can learn fly fishing techniques, view interactive content, and even try their hand at simulating fishing in a special practice pool.

Fly fishing is the only permitted method of fishing, where the angler attempts to trick the fish by offering a tied fly on a hook that imitates a fly or an insect in nature. Most anglers fish under the Catch and Release regime… the angler catches the fish, gives it a kiss, and quickly releases it back into the river. This is also the name of our Interpretive Center, Catch and Release.

Soča Trout

Based on the external appearance – the phenotype of the trout – and also on its genetic profile, we distinguish two types of Soča trout. Zadlaščica type trout have characteristic marbling on their bodies, with red coloration rarely present. Idrijca type trout, in addition to characteristic marbling, also have red coloration in the form of spots and dots, most often along the lateral line.

Adriatic Grayling

Grayling feed on bottom-dwelling organisms and aquatic insects, sometimes also on the fry of other fish. They spawn from mid-March to early May. Here, grayling can reach sizes up to 60 centimeters and weights up to 2 kilograms. They are rarely found in river tributaries.
